Le Lion De Belfort (signed A Bartholdi)
Bronzed metal sculpture of the famous Lion De Belfort dated 1914 as presented to Lieutenant Fenouillet, Les Sous Officers, Brigadiers & Canonniers du Group 1 - 1914 set upon a rich red marble scalloped edged plinth. The Lion of Belfort symbolises the glorious resistance of the city during the Franco - Prussian war of 1870-1871 and was created to pay homage to the resistance forces and the victims. Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to create a monument in homage to the victims of the resistance of Belfort and created, from sandstone, a magnificent statue of a lion against the limestone cliff walls of the castle
